Looking for info from windrock riders

Postby gdoan » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:32 pm

Hey Guys/gals,
Were planning a road trip down to tennesse from Canada in the first week of march. We were hoping you could give us some answers our questions. As much info as you can provide is appreciated.

How is the weather there in the beginning of March? Is snow a risk?
How are the downhill trails when the ground is wet or while its raining? Since were coming from so far we hope to ride rain or shine, unless the trails are superslick and risky.
Any advice on cheap accomadations close by? Preferably motels or cheap hotels.
Are many locals on the trails at a time? From what I gather the runs are poorly marked so were hoping to get some local guidance at first.
Anybody know if they will be riding in the first week of march there? Were always up for riding in a group and sharing shuttle responsibilities.
Feel free to add anything else you think we should know.

Thanks for the help!

We get close to 6 feet of rain a year, on average. There is always a chance of rain, especially in March. Unless we get a freak, super rare storm, there is a low chance of snow. Odds are you will be fine concerning snow. But I would expect wet conditions. The trails can be ridden in the rain. If you can bring some full on spikes it would be much, much better. Our trails are steep, but routes can be put together that aren't as steep and you can salvage a trip and still have a good time. Plus there are a bunch of 4x4 trails that can be shuttled that aren't as steep.

If the weather is nice, there will probably be a steady stream of locals. Best to post up closer to your trip and I am sure you can find a guide.

Check out Windrock Lodge and Windrock Park for cabin rentals. As for motels look up Super 8 in Oak Ridge.

Fyi, 48 inches is the average rainfall for this area, although for the past year we've been in an unusually rainy cycle and there's no end in sight.

Also, there have been several years when late Feb. and early March have given us great riding conditions. Just be prepared for the worst.

Some info on Windrock camping below. And I've never stayed there but I haven't heard great things about the local Super 8 or the Days Inn.

You shouldn't have a hard time talking some locals into coming up there to show you around. Just drop a note here, and let us know as it gets closer. Windrock usually gets around 10-20 riders out there on a nice weekend day, so being crowded would not be an issue. The trails are marked with signs, but the area is so big and there are so many trails that you would want someone to show you around.
see you on the trail
