SORBA Chattanooga facebook page 'coon update

Just got this last night:

Here is the news that everyone has been waiting for.... All trails on Raccoon Mountain are officially OPENED, as the subsurface has fully thawed. Barring another snowstorm and subzero temps, users are expected to police themselves and avoid the trials when wet or muddy.

I would note the forecast is predicting rain 8 out of the next 10 days. If we get more than a few sprinkles please wait 12 hours before riding the trails. If we get a hard rain, please wait for 24 hours before riding the trials. Use your best judgment.

i was able to ride Racoon mtn on monday before they had officially opened these trails up. Dont worry, I was a good bike rider and stayed out of the closed trails. All of the trails that were open were as good as they ever have been! I cant imagine the ones they had closed were to bad off.

In my opinion, if you have to close trail due to excessive erosion problems, you did something wrong in the first place. I know that the Chattanooga SORBA put alot of work into their trail systems but if the problem is so serious it warrants the closure of trails and even the whole system??? Wouldnt a trail closure be a good time to repair, reroute, or reinforce problem areas?

All im saying is, if it happened once...it will probably happen again.

It was not erosion, it was the freeze thaw cycle which allows significant trail damage when ridden. Educate yourself on this and you will understand that it has nothing to do with trail design.

..and it happens every year, not just at Raccoon Mt. Hats off to the SORBA Chattanooga bunch for being proactive.
